Glossary

  • Lineup Card

A lineup card in slo-pitch softball is an official document used to list a team’s batting order and defensive positions for a game. It includes player names, jersey numbers, and their assigned spots in the lineup, ensuring proper adherence to batting and substitution rules throughout the game.

  • Pitching Mask

A pitching mask is protective gear worn by slo-pitch pitchers to shield their face from fast, hard-hit balls. Made from lightweight, durable materials like metal or composite, it ensures safety without compromising visibility or mobility on the mound.

  • Reporting the Score

Reporting the score in slo-pitch softball involves submitting the final game score to the league or tournament organizer. This is typically done by the umpire, team captain, or designated scorekeeper after the game concludes. Accurate reporting ensures proper record-keeping, standings updates, and seeding for future games.

  • Rover

In slo-pitch softball, the rover is an additional defensive player, bringing the total to ten fielders. This player typically positions themselves in the shallow outfield, often behind the second baseman or shortstop, to cover gaps and provide support to both infielders and outfielders. The rover’s role enhances the team’s defensive coverage, especially in areas where balls are frequently hit. (Softball Point)

  • Shooting Box

The shooting box is an informal term used in slo-pitch to describe the area where pitchers stand, often targeted by hitters aiming directly at the pitcher. This can make the pitching position particularly dangerous, emphasizing the importance of wearing protective gear like a pitching mask.

  • Slice Swing

A slice swing in slo-pitch softball is a hitting technique where the batter swings across the ball, creating cross-spin. This spin causes the ball to curve or “slice” away from fielders as it travels, making it unpredictable and difficult to field cleanly.

  • Super Series

The Miken Super Series is a series of weekend slo-pitch tournaments providing Mens A, B, and C, and Womens A and B/C teams the opportunity to compete in a consistent and structured Program, earning Points to determine divisional Super Series Champions each season.

  • Tumbler (Forward Spin) Pitch

A tumbler pitch in slo-pitch softball is a type of pitch where the ball is released with forward spin, causing it to “tumble” as it approaches the batter. This motion can make the ball harder to track and hit effectively, as it often drops more sharply than a standard pitch.
