Definition: Baseball Notation

Baseball notation is the shorthand used to keep score in a game. Each defensive position has a number (pitcher = 1, catcher = 2, first base = 3 … up to right field = 9). Plays are written with those numbers and symbols: • 6–3 = shortstop threw to first for an out. • K = strikeout. • BB = walk. • 1B, 2B, 3B, HR = single, double, triple, home run. • E5 = error by the third baseman.
