Definition: Pitcher’s Box
Definition: A rectangular area (typically 2 feet wide by 10 feet deep) from which the pitcher must deliver the ball.
Why It Matters: The box allows the pitcher to move forward or backward for safety and strategy, provided they remain within the boundaries during delivery. Stepping outside the box before the ball is released results in an "Illegal Pitch."
Canadian Context: Most Canadian diamonds utilize the pitcher's box rather than a single pitching plate to provide pitchers with a "safety zone" to retreat to after the ball is hit.
Cross-Links: Illegal Pitch • Pitching Arc • Strike Zone • Encroachment
