Definition: Triple Play (TP)

A rare defensive move in softball or baseball where three outs are recorded in a single, continuous play. It requires quick reactions and precise teamwork, so triple plays are considered one of the most exciting defensive moves in the game. An example would be a line drive caught by the third baseman (out one), who then tags the runner stepping off third base (out two), and throws to the second baseman who steps on base to retire another runner (out three). This ends the inning instantly with all three outs happening in one play.
