Definition: Softball

A bat-and-ball sport similar to baseball but played with a larger ball (usually 11–12 inches). Softball is very different from baseball due to the field’s shorter base paths, and the underhand pitching style used. Originating in 1887, softball has grown into a global sport with every level of play from competitive to recreational. Variations on softball include fastpitch, 3-pitch, and slo-pitch.
