Definition

Definition: A scoring play where the fielder chooses to put out a preceding runner rather than the batter, allowing the batter to reach base safely. Rule/Context Note: The batter is not credited with a base hit, and it counts as an at-bat. When It Matters: Scoring accuracy, calculating batting average and on-base percentage.
