Definition: Double Play (DP)

A defensive play in softball or baseball where two outs are recorded in one continuous action. Double Plays usually involve a ground ball and fast throws between infielders. A perfect example of this is what is called a 5-4-3 Double Play. A common example is the **5-4-3 Double Play**. This happens when there’s a runner on first base and the batter hits a ground ball to the third baseman (5). The third baseman throws to the second baseman (4), who steps on second base for the first out, then throws the ball to the first baseman (3) for the second out. That quick fielding and throwing records two outs on a single play.
