Definition: Courtesy Runners
In slo-pitch, a courtesy runner is a substitute runner who takes the place of another player on the bases, usually to help speed up the game or to accommodate players with injuries or limited mobility.
• When they’re used: After a batter safely reaches base, the team can request a courtesy runner. The original batter is replaced on the bases, but the hit still counts for them.
• Who can run: Most leagues say the last recorded out must be the courtesy runner, though some allow more flexibility (like designating specific players).
• Limits: Some leagues allow unlimited courtesy runners per game; others cap how many times a team can use them in an inning or game.
• Purpose: They keep the game moving, reduce delays from slow runners, and allow injured players to still bat without running the bases.
