Softball is a bat-and-ball sport closely related to baseball, but with key differences that make it unique. It was invented in 1887 as an indoor game in Chicago, and originally played with a larger, softer ball, hence the name “softball.” Over time, the sport evolved into an outdoor game with multiple formats, from highly competitive fastpitch to recreational slo-pitch.
Unlike baseball, softball uses a bigger ball that is usually 11 or 12 inches in circumference. The fields for softball also have shorter base paths, and the pitching style is underhand instead of overhand. These differences create a faster-paced, more accessible game that appeals to a wide range of players.
Today, softball is played globally, with organized leagues ranging from youth and amateur levels to international competitions like the Olympics.

Softball Types
Softball has several variations, each with its own rules and style of play.
- Fastpitch is the most competitive form, featuring windmill-style pitching and a faster pace that highlights pitching and defence.
- Slo-pitch uses an underhand, high-arc pitch, making the game more about hitting and fielding. Slo-pitch is an easy sport to start playing, with plenty of recreational leagues in cities across Canada.
- 3-Pitch is a very beginner friendly version of softball, where your own teammates pitch to you.
While the rules and pace are different for each type, all forms of softball are fun, strategic games to play with a team!

Fastpitch Softball and the Windmill Pitch
Fastpitch is the most competitive version of softball, often played at the high school, college, and international levels. In this style, pitchers use a windmill motion, where the arm makes a full 360-degree circle before releasing the ball underhand towards the batter. This pitching technique generates incredible speed and spin, with elite pitchers reaching 70 mph or more.
Fastpitch games are played with nine players per team, and strategies like bunting, stealing bases, and defensive shifts are common. This is the format used in NCAA college softball in the United States and in international tournaments.
Known for its intensity, fastpitch showcases some of the top athleticism the sport has to offer. Check out this YouTube video to see just how hard fastpitch can be!
What Is Slo-Pitch Softball?
Slo-pitch is the most widely played recreational form of softball in Canada! In this variation, pitchers throw the ball underhand in a high arc, usually between 6 and 12 feet. This makes pitches easier to hit, because they come in slower than in fastpitch.
Some less competitive slo-pitch leagues even feature pitch heights of 6 feet minimum, with no maximum! Unlimited pitch heights are more common in beer leagues, meaning the games are less serious, and more focused on just having fun.
In slo-pitch, teams usually play with 10 defenders on the field instead of nine, adding an extra outfielder to help cover the larger area. Slo-pitch is the perfect choice for players of all ages and skill levels, and it’s really beginner friendly.

What Is 3-Pitch Softball?
3-pitch is a very simplified, recreational format designed for fun and fast games. In this variation, each batter receives exactly three pitches, no matter the outcome. If they don’t put the ball in play within those three pitches, they’re out.
This style eliminates the need for skilled pitchers and keeps the game moving quickly. In fact, 3-Pitch usually involves a player on your own team pitching to you! Anyone can be a pitcher in a 3-Pitch game, which makes it a fun and non-competitive way for new players to learn the basics of softball.
It’s a popular choice for company events, school gatherings, and neighbourhood tournaments because it allows everyone to participate, no matter their skill level.
