Baserunning is often overlooked but can be the difference-maker in a tight game. Smart baserunning is about maximizing your opportunities and putting pressure on the defense.
The Lead-Off and Read
A good baserunner starts with a good lead.
- Lead-Off: Take a comfortable, aggressive lead off the base. In most slo-pitch leagues, you must stay on the base until the ball is hit. In fastpitch, your lead must be taken only after the pitch leaves the hand.
- First Read: The instant the bat makes contact, watch the ball. Determine if it's a routine out, a hit, or a possible error. Your first three steps dictate your success.
Aggressive Turns at First Base
Always round first base hard, even on a clear single.
- The Angle: Run straight through the base, angling slightly toward the outfield grass. This puts you in a perfect position to turn and look for the throw if the outfielder misplays the ball.
- The Look: After crossing the bag, turn your head toward the ball to decide whether to take the extra base. Never slow down until you pass the bag.
Tag-Up Technique
On fly balls, the tag-up is crucial for advancing.
- Positioning: Stand directly on the base and face the outfielder who is catching the ball.
- Timing: Push off the base the instant the ball touches the fielder's glove. Proper timing allows you to advance before the throw can reach the next base.
