The softball glove is the most essential piece of defensive equipment, and selecting the correct style for your position is critical for maximizing fielding success.

Infield Gloves (Middle & Corner)

Infielders need to prioritize quick transfers and control.

  • Size: Generally shorter, ranging from 11.5 to 12.5 inches. A smaller glove allows for quicker access to the ball for fast throws.
  • Web: A shallower pocket and a closed I-Web or Modified Trap Web are preferred. These webs make it easier to locate the ball and quickly transfer it from the glove to the hand.

Outfield Gloves

Outfielders need maximum reach and security for deep fly balls.

  • Size: Larger gloves, typically 12.5 inches and up. The extra length provides a wider catching radius.
  • Web: Deep pockets and open H-Web or Basket Webs are common. The deep pocket ensures the ball stays securely in the glove after a high-speed catch, and the open webs help locate fly balls through the webbing.

Pitcher and First Base Gloves

These positions have specialized needs.

  • Pitcher: Use a closed, solid web to conceal the grip on the ball until release, preventing the batter from knowing the pitch type.
  • First Base: Use a mitt; a larger, highly padded glove with no individual finger divisions; designed for scooping low throws and securing balls during stretching plays.
