Exceptional defense is built on repetition and footwork. These five drills focus on the core fundamentals needed for quick hands, efficient movement, and accurate throws on the softball field.
1. The Quick Hands Drill (Infield)
- Goal: Improve glove-to-hand transfer time.
- Drill: Fielders kneel without their gloves, 5 feet apart. Partner tosses the ball directly at the player's chest. The fielder catches the ball with two bare hands, using a "soft hand" technique, and immediately tosses it back. Repeat rapidly for 30 seconds.
2. Figure Eight Drill (Outfield)
- Goal: Practice efficient movement and angles on fly balls.
- Drill: Start in the center field. The coach hits or throws balls to the left-center gap and then immediately to the right-center gap. The fielder runs a "figure eight" pattern, practicing their break and speed on balls hit to both sides.
3. Cone Drill (Ground Balls)
- Goal: Force players to get their body in front of the ball.
- Drill: Place two cones about 10 feet in front of the fielder, creating a small "gate." The fielder must move their feet and get their glove down low to field the ball between the cones, ensuring the ball does not pass through their legs.
4. Drop-Step Drill (Outfield Break)
- Goal: Practice the first explosive step backward on a fly ball hit over the head.
- Drill: Outfielder stands ready. Coach points left or right. The player takes one immediate, powerful backward step (the "drop step") with the foot corresponding to the direction, then turns and sprints as if chasing a deep fly ball.
5. Communication and Cutoff Drill (Team)
- Goal: Improve communication and relay accuracy.
Drill: Place players at first base, second base, the cutoff spot (second base or shortstop), and the outfield. Hit a deep fly ball. The outfielder throws the ball hard to the cutoff, who accurately relays it to the target base. Emphasize loud, clear communication ("CUT!", "TWO!", "HOME!").
