Softball gets its name from the softer, larger ball that was originally used when the game was first created in 1887.

Unlike baseball, which uses a smaller, harder ball, early softballs were made to be easier to hit and catch indoors. The name “softball” stuck even as the balls became harder and the game moved outdoors.
