Tournament Terminology Guide

Seeding →

The process of ranking teams 1 through N based on skill level, previous records, or random draw. Higher seeds get easier early matchups and better bracket positioning.

Winners Bracket →

The primary bracket where undefeated teams compete. Teams that lose move to the losers bracket.

Losers Bracket →

A secondary bracket for teams with one loss. Teams must win out to reach the championship game, giving them a second chance to compete for the title.

Bye →

When a team automatically advances to the next round without playing, typically given to higher seeds when the number of teams doesn't fill the bracket perfectly.

Matchup →

A head-to-head game between two teams. In elimination tournaments, the winner advances and the loser is eliminated or moves to the losers bracket.

Championship Game →

The final game(s) between winners and losers bracket champions. May require two games if losers bracket team wins first.
